School Resource Officers

Dedicated to the Safety and Well-being of Our Students

The Blount County Sheriff’s Office has been a pioneer in implementing a School Resource Officer (SRO) program, beginning 17 years ago. Since its inception in 1996, our SRO Unit has grown from two deputies in the county’s high schools to 23 dedicated officers, with one assigned to each of Blount County’s schools and two supervisors available as needed.

Our Mission

The primary mission of the School Resource Officers is to provide a safe and secure learning environment for students, staff, and visitors. Our SROs are committed to fostering positive relationships with students and staff while ensuring that our schools remain safe places for education and personal growth.

Specialized Training

Our SROs undergo extensive training in several key areas to effectively fulfill their roles, including:

  • Tactical Response and Crisis Management: Prepared to respond swiftly and efficiently to any emergency situations that may arise on school grounds.
  • Conflict Resolution: Skilled in mediating disputes and resolving conflicts among students to maintain a peaceful school environment.
  • Child Development: Trained in understanding the developmental needs and challenges faced by students, enabling them to provide appropriate support and guidance.

Year-Round Commitment

While the primary focus of our SROs is on school safety during the academic year, their commitment extends throughout the year. During the summer months, our SROs take on additional responsibilities, including:

  • Patrol Duties: Assisting the Road Patrol Unit to maintain community safety.
  • Court Services: Supporting court-related duties and processes.
  • Special Teams: Participating in specialized units and teams to address specific community safety needs.

Building Positive Relationships

Our SROs are not just law enforcement officers; they are mentors, role models, and trusted figures within the school community. By engaging with students and staff daily, they build positive relationships that contribute to a supportive and secure school environment.

How We Serve

Presence in Schools

Each school in Blount County has a dedicated SRO who is a constant presence, ensuring safety and providing a familiar face for students and staff. Our officers attend school events, participate in educational programs, and are always available to assist with any issues that arise.

Educational Programs

Our SROs conduct various educational programs on topics such as drug awareness, internet safety, and bullying prevention. These programs are designed to empower students with knowledge and skills to make safe and healthy choices.
